400MW Round - The - Clock (RTC) Project in India

Challenge

India’s ambitious energy transition targets, including sourcing 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2070, are accelerating the development of large-scale renewable energy projects. Delivering 400 MW of Round-the-Clock (RTC) renewable power presented a particular challenge, requiring an oversized and geographically diversified hybrid portfolio to ensure a reliable and continuous energy supply. The project combined approximately 900 MW of wind and 400 MW of solar capacity with 100 MWh of battery storage, designed to achieve an annual capacity utilisation factor of 80% and support the requirements of a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Solution

Tractebel acted as the Lender’s Independent Engineer (LIE), providing multidisciplinary technical and environmental & social due diligence across the project. Our experts assessed the project participants and sites, reviewed the proposed technologies and plant design, and performed an energy yield assessment. The scope also covered project contracts and PPA arrangements, construction and completion testing, the off-take and O&M structures, electrical interconnection, licences and permits, as well as project costs and financial model assumptions. This comprehensive review provided the lenders with an independent assessment of the project’s technical robustness and key project risks.

Impact

Through its role as Lender’s Independent Engineer, Tractebel provided the lenders with an independent view of the project throughout due diligence and project monitoring. By reviewing the technical, environmental & social, contractual and financial aspects of the development, our multidisciplinary team helped identify and mitigate key risks and supported compliance with international financing standards. This integrated approach strengthened the basis for informed lender decision-making while supporting the development of reliable Round-the-Clock renewable power in India.
